Thanks for posting this article. I'm decidedly frustrated with struggling to search out germane and intelligent commentary on this issue. Everybody nowadays goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your concise, applicable insight.

A related problem is that it is almost impossible to get ethics approval for research that involves children. If you want to survey their opinions on some issue for the purposes of research, you need to jump through a million hoops. But if you want to survey their opinions for profit, there is almost no barrier to doing so.

I can see no reason why doing research that might help people is any more risky for children than research that is just done for profit.

I agree with you Amy. I had to get a "blue card" some years ago in case I had to play music for the Sunday School children at the church where I play the organ. Since I got the "blue card" I've noticed that everytime there are arrests for paedophilia published in the Queensland press, almost invariably one or more of the perptrators has a blue card.

So what is the point? We've regulated a normal part of human relations, created a large bureaucracy to administer the regulation, and yet it is probably that no child has actually been protected as a result.
